Do Men Settle For Bad Relationships?
Do Men Settle For Bad Relationships?
www.alternet.org Vicki Larson had a piece at the Huffington Post the other day, "Why Women Walk Out More Than Men," citing research indicating that two-thirds of contemporary divorces are initiated by women. Why, she wonders, are men so comparatively reluctant to file for divorce? Larson notes the "bad behavior" of men like Sean Penn, Jesse James, Tiger Woods, and Tony Parker, habitual cheaters all, and asks why it was their wives who chose to end the marriages. Is this a case of men trying to have their cake and eat it too, combining domestic comfort and sexual novelty? Larson isn't sure. One thing I'm sure of: infidelity is far from the only reason women initiate divorce more often than men. Though most statistics indicate men are more likely to cheat than women, the percentage of women who are unfaithful is rising. At the same time, the percentage of divorces women initiate is climbing, too. If there were a simple correlation between infidelity and divorce, then we'd expect men to be initiating divorce more often. But that's not the case. To Read More Click Here: www.alternet.org

Study in Krakow, Poland - movie 1
See our website: www.study-krakow.com During the last decade Krakow became one of the most appreciated tourist destinations in Europe. Many people settle down here for good, falling in love with the city and adding different ideas to the centuries-lasting tradition of Krakow. So, it is truly an international city. The meaning of colours also refers to overseas students who are interested not only in staying for a short period of time but in acquiring professional skills and diplomas recognized all over the world, as well. And this is another dimension of the metaphor of Krakow as the city of colours and, surely, not the last one.

After Brain Study, New Questions About Mobile Phones
After Brain Study, New Questions About Mobile Phones
I'm Carolyn Presutti with the VOA Special English Health Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http How important is your mobile phone, better known to Americans as a cellphone? Many people say they use the device all the time. So far, no studies have proven beyond question that the radio signals from cellphones cause brain cancer or other health problems. But a new study by government scientists in the United States has some people wondering what to think. The scientists found that holding a cellphone to your ear for at least fifty minutes increases brain cell activity. Even the scientists themselves are not sure about the meaning of their findings.Dr. Nora Volkow led the study. She heads the National Institute on Drug Abuse, part of the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Volkow says she would not be concerned that fifty minutes of cellphone exposure would harm anyone. But she says the research does show the need to study whether there are long-lasting effects of repeated exposure over several years. Her team studied forty-seven healthy volunteers in two thousand nine. The volunteers had cellphones placed against both ears while the scientists made images of their brain activity. As part of the test, one phone was activated but muted for fifty minutes. The other phone was off. After that, the people were tested with both phones turned off. Dr. Volkow says the brain scans showed increased activity in brain cells closest to the activated phone. She said the right area of the ...

Learning Peace
Learning Peace
Learning Peace: A Big School with a Big Heart chronicles a year at Annapolis East Elementary. A school where over 700 kids play, study, meet and--like kids everywhere--sometimes fight. But thanks to an anti-violence program introduced in 1996 by principal Heather Harris, bullying and fighting have become a rarity. Peace education has been fully integrated into the school curriculum. Meanwhile, a peer mediation program helps students settle disputes, good behaviour is rewarded at monthly assemblies, and a full-time counsellor devotes his days (lunch hours and breaks included) to helping kids address anger. Over the course of a year, it becomes clear that peace is hard work--but well worth the effort. 2002, 57 min 10 s * Directed by Teresa MacInnes * Produced by Kent Martin Peter d'Entremont Editor - Peter Giffen * Production Agency National Film Board of Canada

Analysis of Genetic Association Studies
Teri Manolio, MD, Ph.D. Director, Office of Population Genomics, NHGRI. Genetics for Epidemiologists: Applications of Human Genomics to Population Sciences, was a short course for investigators and trainees in the field of epidemiology and related population-based sciences. It was conducted by the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) on May 13-14, 2008 at Northwestern University in Chicago. The goal of Genetics for Epidemiologists (GFE) was to familiarize epidemiologists and population-based researchers with recent developments in the theory and methods of human genetics that might be applied to the study of the distribution, natural history and etiology of diseases in populations. The course consisted of eight one-hour lectures and focused on the interface between genetics and epidemiology. Emphasis was on the application of modern human genome analysis methodologies to studies of human populations through the design, conduct, analysis, and interpretation of studies which effectively answer the epidemiologic question of interest. GFE is co-sponsored by the Office of Population Genomics, NHGRI, and the Department of Preventive Medicine at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine. These videocasts are provided as an educational tool for epidemiologic investigators interested in learning more about applying genomics to their work. More: www.genome.gov
